Steering committee
Francesca De Vecchi is full professor of Theoretical Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University in Milan, where I teach Social Ontology (Master’s Degree in Philosophy), Gender Studies (Master’s Degree in Philosophy and Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology), Philosophy of the Person (Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy), Phenomenology of the Person and Empathy (Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene, Faculty of Medicine). In each of her courses, she explores and develops gender perspectives.
Since October 2024, she has been Chair of the Master’s Degree Course in Philosophy of the Contemporary World at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University. Since 2020, she has been Director of the PERSONA Centre (Centre for Research in Phenomenology and Human Sciences) and Co-editor-in-chief of the journal Phenomenology and Mind. From 2016 to 2022 (March), she directed the GENDER Research Centre (Interfaculty Centre for Gender Studies), of which she is now a member of the Steering Committee. Since 2014, she has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Interuniversity Research Centre on Gender Cultures, which brings together seven universities in Milan. Since 2021, she has been a member of the Scientific Committee of the Archive of Women Philosophers, SWIP-Italia. Since 2019, she has been Chair of the CUG (Equal opportunities supervisory committee) at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, and since 2021, she has been a member of the UniSR GEP (Gender Equality Plan) Commission.
She deals with social ontology, philosophy of the person and empathy. Her research perspective is phenomenological: the qualitative saliences characterizing the personal and social experience of the lifeworld, the complicated relationship between people’s identities (their flourishing or shrinking) and the various forms of social wholes of which they may be a part; the phenomenology of personal gender identity.
She is the author of numerous essays in Italian, English, and French published in international scientific journals, class A and indexed by Scopus, and in volumes by Springer, Brill, and Routledge. She has published the following books: La libertà incarnata (Milan, Bruno Mondadori 2008: starting from Jeanne Hersch’s philosophy of existence, she presents an ontology of the person and a theory of the personological and axiological foundations of human rights); Eidetica del diritto e ontologia sociale (Milan, Mimesis 2012: she analyses the eidetic foundation of Adolf Reinach’s phenomenological social ontology and work on the material a priori of law, social acts and social entities); La società in persona (Bologna, Il Mulino 2022: she applies the ontology of the person to social ontology and develop a phenomenologically oriented qualitative social ontology that draws on Husserl’s theory of wholes and parts and Scheler’s axiology to account for the social world as a lifeworld in which people are part of social wholes of various kinds). She has devoted many works to the phenomenology of Edith Stein.
